Piano Studio Aesthetics

The look and feel of your piano studio can impact the quality of experience your students have.  Is the studio inviting?  Is it exciting for students?  Does it encourage and motivate students to want to attend lessons and improve as a pianist?

What are some things piano teachers can include in the studio to make it aesthetically pleasing for students?  Here are some ideas.  Incorporate what makes sense for your space and studio needs.

  • Indoor plants.  Plants are known to improve air quality, reduce stress and create pleasing visual aesthetics (among their many other wonderful qualities).  If you can keep a plant alive (wink) then consider adding a few to your studio space.
  • Display annual student photographs.  Build student camaraderie and recognize each student as a valuable part of your studio community by keeping current pictures of your students in the studio.
  • Personalized cubbies or mail boxes for students (where special treats, notes, or assignments can be left for students).
  • An achievement board (where students are recognized for their accomplishments)
  • A visible calendar of events for your studio happenings (prepare and keep your students excited for upcoming events, and make sure parents are kept in the loop too).
  • A notice board for parents (similar to a calendar of events, this notice board may include additional information that is only for parents, such as reminders that payments are due soon, etc).
  • Seasonal decorations (have fun with themes and seasons — Valentine’s Day hearts and colors, winter decorations with snowflakes and snowmen etc.  You get the idea).
  • A rewards box (where students can select fun items or treats as rewards).
  • A quotes board (where you rotate meaningful quotes for students and parents to read).
  • A miniature musical book library (where students can check out/borrow music or books about music).

Not everyone enjoys decorating, so if you are not a fan, consider hiring help.  Or, maybe even more fun would be to get your students involved in applying fun decorations (from items the teacher has pre-selected and purchased) around the studio.  Each student gets to hang up a snowflake on the wall, for example.  That would be fun!

Let your creativity guide you.  Think about what you liked as a young student.  And even ask your students what gets them excited about their environment. Creating an aesthetically pleasing studio is beneficial for everyone!  So, have fun.
