The best way for a student to learn how to practice effectively at home, is to practice practicing in the lesson! Before sending a student home for the week, make sure they have gone through each of their assignments in the lesson, shown you how they will practice it at home, and have a written reminder of their weekly practicing goal.
And remember that quality practicing is far superior to quantity (time)!
